Middlebury College has some amazing buildings, but Painter Hall
really stopped me in my tracks. As the “oldest extant college building
in Vermont,” it is based on mill architecture and has a simplicity
that has charmed me. The tall chimneys and solid stone side walls
glowed in the midday summer sunlight. One little door at the base,
and two windows set beside that glowed. The building has the
presence of a gentle giant.
