I’ve always loved Bonnie Raitt (can’t imagine
why she isn’t played on the radio all the time!)
and as I painted a little nick in the shadow
of this funny, simple barn in Middlebury, Vermont,
I thought about how it represents another ache
in the weathered surface of aging. The song
leads me to pondering impermanence
even as I appreciate the worn surfaces and the
lovely sunlit planes of the roof and enjoy that
elusive present moment.

When did the choices get so hard?
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there’s less of it to waste
