Southern comfort is such a common image — evoking thoughts
of gracious mansions, biscuits and gravy (and whiskey). I was struck
by how little imagery I connect to Northern comfort, until I painted this
beautiful setting in the high hills in North Chittenden, Vermont.
Looking northward on the Baird Farm toward Nickwackett mountain
in the late summer, I could feel the heat emanating off the land.
Northerners are more likely to find their refuge nestled into
a wind shadow or tucked into a small fold in the curving landscape,
and be content.
