Come What May

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Bluff Head, Huletts Landing, Lake George, New York:
blessed land that can renew any spirit. As I set up my
easel for a small study last summer, the setting sun
was playing with the juvenile trees, making them glow
like little jewels. The grand old cosmic maple tree was
a counterpoint to the youngsters, and the light danced
across the whole space while the lake glowed hot
pink. I thought about what to name this painting for
a long time, discarding names that didn’t fit the feeling
I had while painting. Then I was reminded of this
anthem by Leonard Cohen.
