I’ll be there

In early October, traveling on a back road from Brattleboro,
I passed a simple old barn in Weston. I had to stop and
turn the car around because the light was so remarkable.
The rainy weekend had been miserable and grey, in that
determined and brutal New England way, with cold
drenching torrents warning of winter’s sharp teeth.
As the sun broke through, the shadowed barn wall
glowed in a subtle deep violet and the last remaining
maple leaves were celebrating their survival and
serenading the sunshine. The tree’s branches reached
out and I was suddenly reminded of that old Four Tops song,
Reach Out (I’ll be there).
