My favorite chair painting: I could visualize
two elderly eastern Europeans patiently waiting at
an INS office, he with his legs apart, angular and
stolid, and she with her legs tucked under her,
a little zaftig and careworn.

As I painted this painting, I listened to Tom Petty wailing
“you don’t have to live like a refugee.”

I wanted my chairs to have hope.
