side by side II

The secret of seeing is to sail
on solar wind. Hone and spread
your spirit till you yourself are
a sail, whetted, translucent,
broadside to the merest puff.

This simple ‘holding hands’ barn set has
caught my eye for years whenever I take
Rte 116 through Bristol, Vermont.
The weathered grey siding was alive with
reflected color from the sky and the grass.
In this painting, I tried to see just what colors
were really in those metal roofs. The barns reminded
me of two boats on a broad reach, stately and steady.
